Partioning the 13 GB hard drive

by senthilnathan In reply to Partioning the 13 GB hard ...

Hi,

You need a fat-16 partition with minimum 2gb
for windows-98 system files.

Winnt needs higher version of service pack to access more than 8gb. (latest 6a)

Partition the hard disk as follows

1. Fat 16 partion - 2gb
Install dos, WinNT & win98 in the fat16 partition.

2. Winnt partition - 4gb

create fat32 partition in the remaining space

3. Win98 fat32 partition - 7gb

Hope this will help you.

I thought it was a minimum of SP4 to go over the 8GB barrier. NT will allow you to create a fat16 partition of 4GB by using 64k clusters, but this is definently not recommended with a dual boot. My recommendation would be to put NT and 98 on different partitions. Applications that you want to run under both operating systems will need to be installed under both

be with the trend why don't u install windows nt 2000 in one partition and win98 in the other partition it does not have any hassles of the fat 16/32 file system but if u want to install winnt ver 4.0 and win98 with fat 32 file system then u have togo to this site and download a software at
www.wininternals.com
but if u want u can partition u drive with fat 16 that will create somewhat 6 partition for u hard disk with 2 gb each
chose what ever u like
hope this might help

The easy(expensive) way:
www.partitionmagic.com
Buy Partition Magic.
Saves alot of headaches. Does everything you asked for, even resizes partitions, converts them to every format and boots every OS known to mankind, it's as magic as its name sais. Perhaps even cleans your dishes and dust the carpets :)
2.The tough (and cheap) way:
First install 98 in a FAT32 partition and leave empty space for the future NT instalation. Then install NT in the empty space by formatting that space to NTFSor FAT. NT will recognize the 98 instalation and will provide a menu at boot time to boot to win98.
3.The hard (most self-satisfying) way: LILO (search the web for it (LI(nux)LO(ader)), and read the docs, they provide info on how to do that).
4. Search the web for other boot managers (there's a bunch of them)

I suggest the following method:
create a primary fat16 partition which is a about triple your RAM size. This will be your boot partition. with the rest of your disk create an extended partition and divide it into two 2GB (FAT16) logical drives. Nowinstall windows 98 drive D. Once finished, install windows NT to drive E. Now, if you want to be able to read an ntfs file system from win98, download the utility "ntfs for win98" from the site www.winternals.com ($49.--) and install the utility. Ifyou also want to be able to access fat32 from NT, download "fat32 for NT" from the same site ($38.--) and install the tool. Also apply the newest service pack. now you can change drive d to fat32 and drive e to ntfs. If you want to change the size your your partitions you can use powerquests partition magic. Otherwise you can partition the rest of your drive to an ntfs or fat32 drive (f) and use that with both OS.
