Password Batch file in DOS or AUTOEXEC

By Hulstart ·
Can anybody refresh my memory as to the correct commands to write a batch file which asks for a password in DOS, ie. BEFORE Windows starts up thus locking the whole system and/or add it to the AUTOEXEC. My DOS editing skills, which were nt famous to start with have withered since Windows 95! Also, secondary, would this work with the new Windows XP to which this computer is to be upgraded. Thnx for the help!

Password Batch file in DOS or AUTOEXEC

Hi,

This wont really help as you can always ctrl-c a batch file and say "Y" to "terminate the batch job ?"

You'd be better off adding a password in your BIOS if your motherboard supports it. This means that you cant boot at all without knowingthe password. Usually you can protect the BIOS itself with another password.

When you boot hit DEL when it says hit DEL to go to setup. Its possible it may be some other key, though... then hunt around for a password setting and use that.

Whenyou move to WindowsXP, you'll still have the password protection in the BIOS. If you dont have the option in the motherboard, then WindowsXP has good security requiring a user to enter a password to get in, anyway.

You just need to set up a password for the account you log in with and make sure all the other accounts are disabled.

Cheers,
Tim.

Password Batch file in DOS or AUTOEXEC

My BIOS apparently does not support a password. I have the option of both a manager password and a user password on the Bios. Neither seem to work, the computer starts up as if nothing happened. It is a computer with build date of August 2001. Iam aware that the batch file is easily bypassed but I am seeking a low level security to prevent the children of playing games when not authorized, you know the thing. Thnx 4 the answer

Hi,

OK, in that case you want to do the following...

http://www.security-tips.com/003.htm

or...

http://www.security-tips.com/004.htm

Which are fairly good security measures forcing people to enter a password for Windows 98 (or shutting back down if they dont...)

Cheers,
Tim.
