Password Protection of Folders

No. Win98 is based on FAT32, hence any person using your PC can access any directory/folder of the PC's hard disk - thus the need for password protection. WinXP on the otherhand is based on the Win2k/NT platform wherein access to the folders are controlled in the security tab. Unless you are the Administrator or part of the Administrators group, you can not access any folder that you were not given access to.

Hope this answers your question.

You can tell XP to Share the folder, then use XP's Security to define who can read and/or write. Is this what you're looking for?

Yes, you can protect files and folders in XP.

You may need to use file encryption to get the level of security you desire.

First, your drive must be formatted as a NTFS volume for folder security to function in XP.

There are a number of pages on file and folder permissions along with encryption in the XP help menus.

Alternate method there to password protect folders in Windows XP (without using third party tool):

Method 1: Use Compressed (Zipped) Folders in Windows XP with "Password Protection"

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306531

Method 2: Use NTFS Security permissions to protect a folder (prevent another user accessing it)
