Well first we need to know the model of the PC (eg. IBM Personal Computer, Compaq presario)or the name of the mother board maker and the model type of that (eg. Asus PVI-486AP4). Then you could either go to the website of the PC maker or you could go to drivershq.com and goto BIOS, it will point you in the right direction for bios updates.
You can usual search for updates for a specific model.

Hi, when your machines first boot up and run through memory check, etc. you’ll see the bios name and number at the bottom of the screen (e.g., phoenix xxxxxxx…). For the bios you can either go to the bios’ site such as phoenix or award (with thatversion number) or to the manufacturer of your pcs. If you have no documentation concerning your machines, download a freeware utility named “sandra” from http://www.zdnet.com. Conduct the search for the utility under (of course) utiltities. This will give you a lot of information and some more advanced info. is available if you are willing to purchase and register the software (around @20.00-$30.00). For older machines, this may well be a quick way to find out specs.

First you will have to find out what BIOS make you are using (AMI, AWARD, etc.). Then go to the website of that manufacturer. Now you should ba able to find your mainboard manufacturer with the help of the BIOS serial number during startup (at leastwith an AMI BIOS, this should work). Once you have found your hardware, you should be guided to the correct files you need to download.

Here are a couple of sights that might be of interest that you can get downloads to fit your needs-PC Drivers.com and Updates.com
Check with your local computer stores they will be your best option for materials that you may get for little or nothing.

Most pre-Pentium motherboards had their bios stored on a removable chip, and to upgrade the bios, you had to change the chip. This was due to not being able to flash upgrade the bios.
These chips are usually clearly labelled, so check your motherboard. If it shows the manufacturer, then I would recommend getting in touch with them regarding obtaining a new chip.

It’s more than likely that the bios for these motherboard are not upgradeable. I wouldn’t bother personaly, I would just upgrade the boards.
