Pay for printing

By jbunse ·
Does anyone know how to set up a printer where you have to pay to use it on a network?

We have a printer which needs to be set up so that it charges students for each page that they print...but it must be on a network. Any ideas on how this can be accomplished? I was wondering if anyone was aware of any software that can be used to monitor where print jobs come from and isolate them from other print jobs from other computers??

Current lan is 15 computers using NT 4.0 with Novell server 5.0 which handles the network access and printing. Can this be done just using Novell?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

You might want to do some or all of the following:
Check www.ZDnet.com download center using printer accounting as the search word.

Go to the local Kinko's and see what they have setup and how it works, in many of their centers they have computers to rent and charge printing by the page. If you don't have a Kinko's then any place that rents computer usage by the minute/hour that provides printing also - many libraries even have such setups.

Call a few of the business machine or printer sales companies in your local area. They often can provide a total solution of printer, accounting, and even Point of Sale integration assistance.

Check with the company which sells or services your Novell account or a local Novell authorized reseller for a Novell integrated application that might be available through the application channel.

Consider how you are going to handle the 'purchase' activity and maintenance, it is a consideration.

And in this day an age don't be afraid to think "big" and can this be a income point for your group. <grin>
