PC boots up in Win98 instead of XP

By RastaRaven ·
Hi

A few weeks ago I installed XP on my PC which has two HD one 80Gb (dirve D) and one 7Gb (dirve C, which is older). The C drive is mainly used for Windows and I try to install all other programs on the D drive. A few days ago my computer started trying to boot up with Win98 (the previous op system on the C drive) and failing. So now I have the PC boot up on one of my CD drives using the XP disk. I have installed XP again (more than once) but no change. How can I fix this, will I have to format the C drive or what?
HELP!!!!

If you are describing a dual boot on the system
Partition the drive with 2 partitions using FAT32
load windows 98 first, then load Windows XP in seperate directories, installing Xp as a clean install.
After running setup and loading the OS's,you then can open the Control Panel in Windows XP,double-click System, select Startup and Recovery, you will then be given a window to set which operating system loads first

See the following sites for reference to dual booting

PC boots up in Win98 instead of XP

Thanks for your answer. But I am not trying to use a double boot system. My PC was running Win98 but I upgraded to XP and I have already converted my C drive to NTFS in an attempt to fix this booting up with Win98 problem.

Note: I am not trying to have a double boot system. I just want to get rid of Win98 and have a clean XP setup.

Boot the PC with the win98 boot disk. When you get to the A: prompt, run "fdisk /mbr" and then run "fdisk" ... when in fdisk, make sure you delete the partitions on both the C and D drive. Next, setup a new partition on the C drive only using all 7 GB, note that the D drive can be setup later inside of XP using NTFS. This is because fdisk can only do FAT32 which would limit your 80GB drive to partitions of 32 GB max. Of course, this can also be done by just using the XP CD, but not sure howto run the "fdisk /mbr" command from the CD. Now exit fdisk and reboot.

Keep the boot disk in the A: drive. When you get back to the A: prompt, run "format c: /u" and let it format the drive. Should take around 15-20 minutes for a 7 GB drive. Now take out the boot disk and insert the XP CD. Reboot.

Follow the instructions about installing, making sure to put the OS on the C drive. Once you get into XP, open a command prompt and type "convert c: /fs:ntfs" which tells the computer to convert the C drive from FAT32 to NTFS at the next reboot. Now reboot.

Let XP convert the drive, it will happen after the POST screen but before getting into windows. Now, once you get back into windows, right click on my computer -> manage. Choose disk management, and make D drive a basic partition and then format with NTFS.

Hope this helps.

PC boots up in Win98 instead of XP

i think it is certainly weird that it worked fine for a while and then started booting into win98. i wonder if a virus scan happened and you got warned that the boot record and changed and you maybe restored the boot record from backup?
if so, the question would be how to get the xp boot record back? repair console? sys'ing from bootable floppy?

I will try to partition and get back to you on how that worked.

I seems likely that the master boot record is damaged since sometimes when it boot up it goes into the repair console.
