PC keeps running

By brifd1 ·
Windows XP Professional. Compaq 5716. I
start up computer, never stops...an hourglass
continues to appear. I bring up Task Mgr, see
40+ applications running. Can add New Task,
but that task tends to time out. What can I do to
get to be able to use the Start menu again?

I'd recommend starting the computer in Recovery Console and running a chkdsk /r

WHat was the last thing you installed on this computer?

Reboot your system and start in safe mode by tapping F8 continually until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. Then use the arrow keys to choose Safe Mode. Once the computer has booted, Click on Start -> Run -> and type in msconfig -> Click OK. This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab, every item on this page that has a check mark is an item that is starting up at the boot - the items you are finding in the Task Manager. I would suggest unchecking everything except systray. This should not only fix your problem, but should also free up your system's RAM which will improve performance. Good luck!

I ended up reinstalling XP, but your answer was helpful.
For some reason, I couldn't get Safe Mode to appear
previously.

There are multiple users of this computer, so
what program was last installed is difficult (if
not impossible?) to determine.
I ran chkdsk previously, but not with "/r"; I'll try
that.

Interestingly, systray was not in the list.
Perhaps that's part of the problem??? At least
I can get to my documents-most importantly
the tax ones at this time of year-thanks to
answer #2, so I can move them off of that HD
(I have 2 on that computer) and can reinstall
XP if need be.

More to follow.

AutoRecovery said it fixed something, dunno
what. Still can't install a printer driver (from a
Control Panel nor from the CD itself-says
Windows is in an "abnormal state"). Now a
message appears stating that since the
hardware changed significantly that I have to
reactivate Windows...that ain't going to happen
since I've lost my Internet connection, too (see
thread_id=122946). This is the second Wintel
computer that I've had these annoying and
time-wasting problems with. Thankfully, I've
had a Mac for all of these years with nothing
close to these problems...that's what I'm
typing these on. Certainly, those reading this
aren't having these problems, or they'd have
left Windows a long time ago. How does one
avoid this? It looks like I'll be reinstalling
Windows XP...
