My friend got another computer about 2 years ago, but she kept the same Monitor, which is about five years old. Now she is having problems with the Monitor going off and on, she said that if you just touch it it will come back on. I have been trying to help her solve the problem, telling her that I think she needs to increase her server size and also to check the connection. I also told her that she needs to go to the part of the Monitor like mine it is at the bottom of the monitor a little door that you open and it controls the contrast, brightness, etc and see if her settings are right. I don’t know what else to tell her. I would hate for her to have to buy another one if she didn’t have to.

Check the monitor cable connection to the video card on the PC.
If it is loose, the monitor can go on and off as the connection makes and breaks.

Also check the monitor power cord.

It is VERY possible that an internal connection inside the monitor has fatigued over time and is causing the intermittancy.

If the monitor has actual controls, and not digital controls, with the monitor OFF, rotate each control through it’s entire range 5 to 10 times. This will clean up the controls.

Ifcleaning the controls fixes the problem, or makes it better, your friend may want to have a local shop service the controls with a special cleaning fluid.
Or, it may be time to start saving for a new monitor.

dont know where you live but in the US 17″ and 19″ monitors are relatively inexpensive. A 17″ can be purchased for less than $100.00 at Fry’s Electronics [after rebate] [usually an Envision brand]. The new Flat Panel Displays are also coming down inprice [what a 19″ CRT used to cost a year or two ago]. Might be best to invest in a new monitor.

Shoot down to a used computer store and pick up a 17″ monitor. Should be able to find something nice for 50-100 bucks. Her monitor probable has a bad solder connection somewhere and isn’t worth cost to repair.

They are correct that either it’s a faulty monitor that needs to be chucked out with the Christmas garbage or power management settings need to be reset properly( remember that monitor’s hold charge when throwing out). Most likely it’s toast.

Kep in mind too that monitors hold a high voltage for up to a couple years when unplugged so don’t have her opening the case, that should be left tothe professionals. Best answer is unpluggin replugging power and connections to the pc and running the dials back and forth and if that doesn’t fix it, replace it used or new, whatever the pocket book can afford. Sounds like a dead monitor, just make sure that
she doesn’t have some sort of nutty screen saver
settings. If not, monitors are easy enough to find
nowadays, just buy a new one.
