PC only runs with cover off?

My PC shuts down when the cover is on and I must shut it down manualy from the on/off button, and the on/off button is staying on "green" static even though there is nothing functioning on the pc.... with the cover off it appears fine.....

Bad Power Supply?
Bad Capacitor(s) on Motherboard?
Bad Fan(s)?

I appreciate any input!

All the above?

Check the fans, that's easy. Power supply would be my next guess.

I once had a PC that refused to turn on unless one held the top of the case with 1 hand. It was flawless after that.
We replaced everything in the case except the power switch, and the problem remained. Funny thing is we tried putting things on top of it, and it never worked unless someone was touching it (even lightly), and it was a plastic case, so no current was being transferred.

In your case, make sure that everything is snug, and there is nothing blocking fans, etc..
make sure that wiring is out of the way, and the case side is not grounding anything. Check that wires arent cut or have the insulation removed anywhere

Could be all of those...

... more than likely though, it's heat related. So, start with looking at (possibly replacing) the case, CPU and/or Power Supply fans. And remember, just because they're turning doesn't mean they're turning fast enough to cool the components.

Also check for dust buildup.

Thanks for the quick response!

I was thinking that it is not cycling correctly and thought the best bet was to replace the power supply, evrything else looks okay, the cooling fans the capacitors etc,,,,etc,,,the pc is 8 years old.... what do you think?

8 years old?

by Churdoo In reply to Replace???

I think it's time for a new one, but that's just me. :-)

You can get a referb pc for $200

by jdclyde In reply to Replace???

Definitely not worth putting money and time into an 8 year old system.

tigerdirect has referbs all the time, that is where I get them from and have had zero problems with them.

How long does the computer run with the cover on?.

Is this an intermittent shut-down or does it shut-down straight away?.
Sometimes there is a small cover switch of which is an alarm, what this small switch does is sound an alarm when the cover is off, so this small switch might be the cause of your problem. Go into your BIOS, press F1, F2, DEL key depending on your setup, and look for something like "side cover alarm" and mark it "disable". Hopefully this should sort it out.

It shuts down in a matter of minutes, sometimes a few other times and sometimes several minutes.

This computer should be EARTHED.....

by Peconet Tietokoneet In reply to shuts down......

It does sound like a case alarm, i have a small switch on my old Windows ME system, i make sure that it pressed now and again to make sure it is working. Also make sure that the case is earthed. It should be from the power supply box. The thought of static could also be the cause, make sure that the power supply is well connected (metal to metal) to the case in question and does not have any gaps so as to give good contact. Is the case near the floor?, if so raise it a little so it is clear of the floor, make sure it is well vented.

ongoing pc shutting down

by connectpc In reply to How long does the compute ...

.... listen to this, when the computer is sitting with no keyboard/mouse/monitor -- just booted up at the welcome screen *(xp home edition)WITH the cover ON it runs for hours!? --- no hitches/ it is up on a testing bench, and I had it up on a couple of used dvd's on the carpeted floor in its normal (new spot, just moved from a hardwood floor scenario)thought that if it was raised a "tad" that would help with air flow....on the carpet. Perhaps it needs to be raised even higher off the carpeted enviroment? ???
OOOOOh and by the way I ran Toolstar diagnostics and everything passes, though it does not address fan/power supply testing.
