PC running Windows 7 won't open certain internet pages plus

By ShaggysMine ·
I have had this PC for quite awhild and have never been able to open certain webpages. If I am on Facebook and have a link on my page, I cannot click the link and have it open in that or any other window. Any suggestions? Also, I have tried to share files between this computer running Windows 7 and my other computer running Vista. Is there a trick to doing that. I use to be able to share between XP and Vista just fine. Thanks for any help. .

how are you accessing the internet?

by ARandomPenguin In reply to PC running Windows 7 won' ...

there could be a rule under the router settings or your firewall dis-allowing and allowing certain content to pass through. browser options on trusted sites or the like?

what error do you get when you try to open this pages? 404? network issue? distrusted certificates? or does it just act as though you havent clicked the link at all?

have you friend a different browser? maybe test that those pages are available on other PCs?
what about clearing out your cookies and cache then reloading those pages?

as for your other issue, what kind of network are you currently set up with? or how are the different computers linked for file sharing?

I do not have any firewall stopping access and I don't think there is a router setting stopping access. I don't get any error message and yes, it does just act as though I haven't clicked the link, at all.

I have not cleared out the cookies, but can they be set to be deleted once a week or so? I think mine are and I do not search many sites on this PC.

The computers are linked with ethernets through a router. I have read some about how maybe Windows 7 and Vista don't share files nicely. Is that true? That is what I am trying to share between.

I appreciate your time. Thanks

Firstly what are the Security Settings on the Browser you are using here?

by OH Smeg In reply to PC running Windows 7 won' ...

That could very easily be your issue. IE can prevent some links within sites from being accessed so that is a possibility here.

Also if you have any Security Software like Norton's 360 Installed it can be set to block some Web Sites.

As for File Sharing you have to setup the Network on the 7 system first as I would imagine here a Workgroup and chose what you want to share and then on the Vista system after making a disc on the 7 system. This link may help

remember to remove the space from between microsoft and the .com for a working link.

Thank you for the sharing link. I will check it out when I get my other PC back on the internet.

As for the security settings, they are set to medium-high and says that is appropriate for most websites. I have no sites blocked and I do not have Norton's or any software that can block sites. If I have this set wrong please let me know what I should have security set at. I have never blocked sites and this PC has always been this way. It has a lot of things that I can't figure out though. I will figure them out one by one.

Thank you for you response.

Ensure that you have applied the latest windows updates and most importantly the latest browser updates, ensure you're running the latest versions of java and adobe flash player.

I am up to date. I do have to ask, if that was the issue, wouldn't it have not acted this way at some point when it was newer? This IE has never allowed me to just click or double click on a link and let me always view it. My other PC, which has it's own issue, will allow me to see all the links either in that window or it will open another window. They are set the same way. Thanks for the info.

browser setting seems to be the issue, have you tried a different browser? maybe enabling cookies on your current browser? what about manually entering the link via copy paste, does that work? (just to test link, not as permanent solution).

If using IE i would recommend Chrome or a Chrome based browser.
as i recall i had a similar issue with embedded links in chrome. i cleared out the cache, cookies and everything except bookmarks. that seemed to fix the issue.

I really hate to change browsers. I'm not a spring chicken and I like simple, but I did enable cookies and I did clear them. I am able to copy and paste all the links I want to see unless it is a clickable button. That is when it is bad. My other PC can't get an internet connection now due to a power issue so I was hoping to fix this on, but so far not happening. Thanks so much.

I finally gave in and tried Chrome for my browser and it does allow links to be accessed. I do have to figure out how to change font size and other settings on there though. Thank you
