Pc Shuts down will not reboot

By ralph.brown1 ·
Suddenly Pc shuts down and will not reboot when the start button is pressed, but after some 4 hours when the start button is pressed Pc then reboots.Sometimes switching an electric kettle on will cause the shutdown. Can it be earthing?

Agree,

First thing, replace the power supply. If that doesn't work, worry.

Also check for any dodgy connections, but more than likely the PS.

it sounds more like a power line problem than a power supply to me. the kettle makes it shutdown sometimes. bet your pc's switching power supply cannot tolerate brown out. can you invest in a battery backup for your pc? good idea even if it doesn't fix this problem.
btw, we say 'ground' instead of earth. 'a bad ground' or 'poorly grounded' or 'not grounded'
and yes, i am not an electrician but you could have a grounding problem in your building.

Can you possibly plug the computer (or the electric kettle) into an outlet that's on a different electrical circuit?

I'm assuming you are located in the UK--when I was stationed in Germany, we had a similar problem. (Somehow the electric dryer located in the bath was on the same circuit as the TV located in the living room). Reducing the load on the sensitive circuit worked for us.

Thank you all for your replies. We have now checked the house wiring (Grounding) and found no earthing! This has been rectified and we can now operate the electric kettle anywhere without the PC shutting down.We are in UK.
However the PC is now still shutting down leaving the cooling fan running but no display and will not reboot for some time.We will now take the covers off and look for loose sockets/Plugs before replacing the PS.Thanks again.

well, sorry you cannot run your pc even tho we may have helped with the electric kettle.
can you run at length in safe mode or does it shutdown then also?
tell us more now, please repeat yourself. is this random? is it always say after so many minutes..it is not suspending due to inactivity, right? does it shutdown when, say printing or editing a large picture. does it shutdown just sitting there. could it be it is not shutdown but rather the video driver has shut off the monitor? can you try another monitor? another video card?
anything in the event log?
