PC Slow to Respond

By Super_IT_Mom ·
I have an application that I use to scroll through scanned documents. On one particular PC (W2K, SP3), it scrolls very very slow. I have two other identical PC's that this does not happen to. How do I determine what is causing this problem, and then fix it? Thank you!

What is the difference in the PC models and builds. RAM, Processor speed, Graphics card etc.

The system needs enough memory and updated graphics drivers to display the document properly. If you can prodvide more info it will help figure out where the problem is.

P4 Latency would not create such a noticable drag as that you've described. P4's would not sell at all if they were that bad.

It is a difference of milliseconds that would go unnoticed unless for ex. running high end graphics rendering programs, at which time the lag would only be noticed if side by side with a high end Athlon or PIII.

There are several causes why PC is responding slow. These are the three most likely the causes.
First your system might be infected with a virus, second is that there is a leak in your RAM, and third is your hard drive is about to fail or there is a bad sector.
I would like to recomend the following to be done. Update you Anti-Virus software and reboot and then select safe mode to scan the HD.
It there is no virus run a diagnostic test for the ram (There are diagnostic software that are freeware in the internet)
If the test is fine ...check the hard drive if you have ample size of free space ...for win2k you need at least 500MB swap file...if not you could download diagnostic tools for HD from the net. WD and Maxtor have their own tools.

Good Luck

Do the simple things first.
1. Do a virus check with an upto date data base.
2. Defrag the hard disk.
3. Follow the advice already given and check your hardware.
Cant be much wrong and the above will sort it out!

Someone told me that a P4 has a latency problem. Could this be the problem, and if so, how can I fix it?

The PC is a P4 running a Kofax Adrenaline card which is attached to a high-speed scanner. Of course, Kofax says it's the software and our software people says it's the Kofax card. Do you think it would be worth it to try it in a P3? I mean, what's the worst that could happen......
