    Locked

    by britontn ·

I am trying to setup a connection over a telephone line to allow moving data from one PC to another remote PC.
I know with applications like PC Anywhere you can do it over the internet but I want to do it by just using two modems and a phone line.

If it is possible and if anyone knows how to do it please help

You will need a dialup modem to do this..

But it will be very slow. If the computers are in the same house or location then you do not need a modem just a long(depending how far the other computer is) Cat5 cable.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

and file transfer, last time I looked at it.

It would not be very fast. I know one software company that provides support for a specialized accouting package that still uses this method for remote support and updates.

You can connect two pc to transffer data. you can use Multitech 24834ZDX modem or any modem of lease line and dial up mode which can be set by a jumper. you will have to configure modem with AT Command and them you can connect two modem over any telephone line. if pc’s are in a single room modems can be connected with end to end RJ11 cable. if you can do this it will help you. if you cant and want more setp wise details contact me…

You recon I can use any modem so long I set the jumpers right?
And when I connect, do I simply dial the telephone number for the line connected to the machine I wish to connect to? Are there any third party softwares needed. The machines I am trying to connect both use Win XP

          In reply to Hi

Hi, you can follow what you tried earlier with modems. yes you can do this on any modem with lease line/dial and org/ans jumper settings. in this case distance does not matter. what all u have to do is that put first modem in dial up setting connect it with pc on COM 1 and then go to start/accessories/communication/hyperterminal. here in hyper terminal select COM 1 and use defauilt settings as bit rate 9600. all this you have to do is for AT Command settings for lease line. now type as FollOws and aftetr each command press enter;(NOTE IN COMMANDS BELOW 0=ZERO)
          AT

          AT&E

          AT&ED0&WO

          AT$SB38400&W0

          ATZ

Now exit from hyper terminal. follow same on other modem. after this put one modem in org mode and second on ans mode by jumper settings. connect both modems to two pc’s. connect telephone line and make sure that you connect a hand set parrellel to this connection. dial other no from one set, pick up other phone ans immediately switch on ur modem (both). u will hear a tone like fax machine. now ur modems are handshacked or connected see if the cd connection light is on on modem panel. this all u can do now the main thing is that what for u want this?? for more u can mail me

Perhaps until you resolve your dilemma, burning the data to an optical disc and popping it into your postal service, might be a suitable alternative. 😉
