Most likely you have a bad memory chip. Switch SIMMs from the working computer just to make sure, or boot from a diskette with device=himem.sys /testmem:on in config.sys. Try also changing the memory access times in CMOS setup>chipset setup.
Could be also a boot sector virus, or the virus protection activated, but in general win95 displays a warning that you should disable virus protection from CMOS setup.
Also do a
fdisk /mbr
to rebuild the MBR. Perhaps windows cannot write it properly.

1- Check Your Bios settings and make sure that the disk is recognized and is selected as the 1st bootable drive.

2- Run Scandisk to make sure you do not have any bad sectors that are hanging out on your boot partition. If it finds bad sectors letit mark them as bad.

GOOD LUCK!!

All your data should be transfered to another drive before proceeding. On the older 486 units you need to make sure that the BIOS can support the drive you are installing. If you can get to the CMOS see if it is reading the drive correctly. Format the drive using the old relaiable fdisk /s command after you have partitioned the drive. The partitioning will create an active partition, and the format will load the COMMAND.COM IO.SYS AND MSDOS.SYS. After that you should be able to load your the drive with a new OS. Good luck!

If you did a recent fdisk and set up new partitions, please make sure that the primary partition is set active in the status.
