PC will not come on

By Sea60 ·
I have an IBM Aptiva when I try to power it up the green light on the front comes on and then goes out and nothing happens. I suspect the power pack but would like more info on what to look for . Thank You

First make sure that all connections and power cords are connected and plugged in properly, try holding the button for a few seconds while powering on to check if this could be a faulty switch or power supply problem

Secondly check the fan to the power supply and make sure it is runningthis can be done by holding your hand over the fan

If the power cords and connections are seated properly then you can check the memory to make sure it is seated this will apply to the video card also

Still a problem then you may want to check the power supply, cpu and the motherboard for problems.

If its a newer computer it will not boot up if the fan on the cpu is bad. Look at the fan when you turn on the computer. If it does not start it could be your problem. I would try another power supply and see if it happens.

There are many possabilities.
I would first try checking / replacing the cmos backup battery.
If the battery is getting weak, it can cause the cmos memory to have bad data, and prevent booting.

Next, check to make sure that all cards, connectors, and memory modules are seated to the motherboard. If any of these are loose, it can cause the PC to not boot.

While I suspect that the power supply is not bad, it is fairly easy to swap out the power supply. Just make sure that you get the correct style supply.

I put in a new battery , I held in the on/off switch , all connection are good and still the power will not stay on. The fans do not run or try to start. Is it safe to unplug the motherboard and other components to check if the power will stay on?

Ensure especially that the cpu is properly seated. I have known a loose 'slocket'card produce this effect.
