Peer to Peer Networking Problem

By computer_excel ·
I have 12 computers using Windows XP Pro, SP1, and they are networked using peer to peer. All computers are mapped to each other local hard drives. All computers can talk to each other, except two particular computers. These 2 problem computers can access to all other computer except each other. I am not able to ping each other, yet I replaced one problem computer with a laptop using exact same CAT-5 cable, and this laptop was able to ping other problem computer.

I checked for conflict in IP address and MAC address. IP addressing are automatically assigned. The Linksys 4 ports Router is the DCHP server.

What are the possible cause(s) of two particular computer not able to connect each other.?

Try releasing and renewing the ip addresses, may be a conflict. Also try changing the SID, this may be duplicate as well. Make sure that the dhcp server has enough IP addresses to hand out. Also make sure that they are not sharing the same computer name.

change the SID?? well, i'd like to hear if that fixes it...
i would check for XP and other firewall mis-configuration (turn off XP firewall) zonealarm, norton internet security, like that.
try swapping NIC with one from a computer not showing the problem
if you can't ping, something is wrong tcpip stack or maybe hardware or media type on nic...lock down to 10mb half duplex or 100mb full duplex

There is a 10 concurrent share limit on Windows clients.
