Peer-to-peer networking slowdown

By erevans ·
I have a small peer to peer network. I store a bunch of Word 2000 files on a WinME machine. I have no problem opening, editing and saving these docs on the Win98 and WinME machines on the network but on my two XP machines, I experience occasional slowdowns. Sometimes just pulling up a file will create a two minute delay. Any ideas?

Try changing the network cables (CAT 5) of the machine to the hub. Then try connecting it to different ports on the hub.

When opperating the WinXP machines, are you running any other processes in the background?
Maybe one of them is eating all the memory and bandwidth.

On the XP machines, when you are experiencing the slowdown check the task manager (Ctrl/Alt/Del) to see how much memory is being used, check what other applications are running and look at the processes to see which process is taking up most of the CPU time. This might give you a clue to the problem.
