Periodic browsing and logon issues

By tmccleary ·
Network is running W2k AD Mixed Mode. Users at one site will be able to browse the network and login without any problems, and then both will stop work for a while. When they are not working, searching for a computer still works. Domain has one W2K server at one site and another W2K server at another site connected via a 56K PTP connection. The second site doesn't have this problem at all.

Any ideas on why this is happening? We're stumped.

Periodic browsing and logon issues

Do you have the 2 sites configured as their own Sites in AD? Or do you only have a single Site when you open AD Sites & Services?
If I had to guess, I would think that there is replication issues going on over the 56K line, and it is being saturated. I would also guess that you have a single Site, and that the machines in the location with the problem are trying to go to the Win2K server at the OTHER location for browsing, and since the 56K line is full, the browsing requests fail.
So, I would set up 2 Sites, with each Win2K server (and both are Domain Controllers, right???) as a Bridgehead server for each Site.
You could then set up relication between the Bridgehead servers to run at night, when users are not normally on.
Try this Microsoft article on implementing AD for branch offices:

hope this helps

Associate a subnet with each of your sites,Link your sites and chose your replication parameters, since it is over 56k link you can schedule and choose protocol.Ip would be preferable in your case because Ip repl is compressed.Hope it helps
