There are several ways to do this. You can disconnect from the network, you can change your subnet mask. Though the solution I think you want can only be had in a firewall solution. You need to obtain firewall software or hardware. Though you may want to check the website of your NIC manuf. They may have some security firmware in the card that you can tap into.

First of all, change your computername. Then,if you have a fixed IP-address, change it. If you receive an address from a DHCP-server, you can do a ipconfig /release, followed by a ipconfig /renew in a DOS-box.

If you are running windows98, there are some firewall utilities that might let you turn off ping. If not, there is a program called WinProxy that may let you do it. It only costs around $50 and you can get it in most any store that sells software. There is a free 30 day trial download for it at http://www.winproxy.com/. If you were running Linux you could do it with the command "ipchains -A input -p ICMP -j DENY".
Your only other option is (if you are not running on a DHCP server system) is to change your hostname and IP address so you cannot be specifically identified, but this may restrict your access to other services if your network nameserver cannot identify you. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Firewall, I think, would be the best option for this. It maybe a little difficult to configure for you but it would be most effective

The Firewalls have it. If you are concerned about others accessing your PC or ports, go to www.grc.com. They will run a system test to see what on your computer is visible. They also have links to several firewall sites which will let you download a30 day trial. In addition to this, they are presently working on a free firewall. I have tried three of the ones they list and found that SyShield seems to be the most effective at making my computer "disappear" on the network.

Good Luck
