Hi,

"mmsystem296" is part of your Sound Compression Wave properties. "MCI" is Either Midi or Multimedia Control Interface...I think...I have experienced this problem before. It can be fixed, sometimes, by un-installing your current Sound Card driver, and re-install with a new fresh copy. Removing the Sound Device will not help. You have to removed the Sound card from SAFE-MODE. In addition, within Control Panel, Add/Remove Program, Windows Setup, Multimedia section: Uncheck "Audio Compression" restart, and re-check to refreshed the driver.

Mpeg movie device files may be damaged, missing or disabled. Start by RE- installing your windows over the top as a quick catch all. Your fast machine can copy in new files while you have a lunch break. If you like to tinker, there is a separate patch for - mmsystem296 but you may not need it. "To fix this problem, Microsoft suggests that you download - http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/Mmsys296.exe and then run it to associate the audio-video interleave (.avi) files with the Microsoft AVI File support libraries." OF COURSE THE NEWEST MEDIAPLAYER IS A FREE DOWNLOAD and does offer other benefits.

I found one of the versions listed there worked forme, even with Win95.
Be sure to follow instructions and be rid of the OLD device files. Easy enough, good luck
