PocketPC - PalmPilot Comparisons

By maneeshpangasa_man ·
What is the difference between Microsoft's PocketPC and the PalmPilot? Which is a better buy? So far I have the impression that PocketPC's are better in value but Palms are cheaper making them the better product to buy. Please let me know what you think ASAP.

I prefer the palm myself although it may not be as versitile as a pocket pc. In late summer or in the fall there will be a flood of hybrid cell phones that will also function as a PDA or personal PC. PC Expo in the end of June will display many of these devices. If you have the time visit this show and see for yourself.

The real answer to this is "it depends". What is it you want to do with the PDA and what do you need to run on it. It's pretty much the same as is a PC or a Mac better for me. They're different and the real determining factor is what your application is.

That said, I have and still love my Palm IIIc. It keeps addresses, numbers, and notes for me, syncs with my e-mail, has a few nifty utilities and plays a mean game of backgammon. :)

Look at the applications you want, and the answer shouldbe apparent. The Pocket PCs are more powerful and flexible (you can't hook a GPS up to your Palm) but the Palm offers many of the most wanted features and is considerably less expensive. I use mine for the most typical PDA tasks and have never been dissatisfied.

BTW, Sears is clearing the IIIc for under $200...and no, I'm not affiliated with Sears or Palm in any way.

Good luck!

To begin with, my experience with Pocket PC has been that it seems to be still in Alpha stage. Too much emulation of a desktop which makes for an awkward display. Palm OS is compatible enough for most purposes. In fact, with most add-ons available, Palm is nearly as versitile as Pocket PC and takes less memory. And until refinements can be made to the color displays which pale in bright light, I'll stick with the B/W Palm.

It is truly based on your needs...
If you start looking at the technical features they look very similar. What I have found is that the PocketPC format is more powerful and has more room for future apps. it still falls short on the number of available apps. today. The Palm format is very popular and there are literly thosands of apps. available both free and for a fee. I have tryed both formats, and there is not much difference between them. Price is what makes the call. You have to ask yourself what will I be using this PDA for? Then go to ZDNet.com and do some shopping and comparing. They have a section called "Finding the right PDA". Enjoy.
