POP UPS ACCURE WHEN NOT IN IE!!!!!

By REDBARON ·
I have problems with popups when not in
IE. Just during everyday operations I will
get a popup add. I have a popup stopper that
handles most of them, but some still get through.
Does anyone know how I can track them down and
terminate them.

Try Spy-Bot. It will look on your hd for spy programs that launch themselves randomly.
Download from CNET.com

Are these POP-ups truly an I.E ?mini-browser? window or the Windows Messenger Service POP-up? I have seen others confuse teh two.

If it is in fact an IE POP-up you may want to try running some spy-ware and ad-ware cleaners. Here are a few that you could try out for free:

If these are the Windows Messenger Service (not to be confused with MSN Messenger chat program) then you can simply disable this service.
Example for Win2k:
1) Start>Run>Type ? services.msc?
2) Change ?Messanger? to Manual Stop.

If this stops your POP-ups then obviously this was it.

Please feel free to hit me with some more details and we can investigate further.
Good Luck!

Later,
Jim

Spybot (however it does sometimes work) doesn't do a very good job at scanning registry entries thoroughly. I've run an ADAWARE scan immediately after SPYBOT and found an additional 9 entries to be removed.
You can download ADAWARE which will giveyour system a really good check for spyware and background services from http;//www.lavasoft.nu .

If you still get pop-ups, revert to Jim-H's response regarding the Windows Messenger Service.

Good luck,
OM

It sounds like you have some "spyware" installed. They are not all the same but a good number will allow your details and where you have surfed to be sent to a site an prompt advertising pop-up targeted at you.

They get installed when you agree to licence terms for some software you actually want. This explains it in some detail.

Most of the major virus checkers will help you identify spyware and clean this up.

Hi REDBARON
If you are talking about the grey boxes that come up ON TOP OF everything else while you are online. That is a service in 2k/XP. To turn this off, go to your services icon, then scroll down till you see messenger service(don't worry it's not msn messenger) just disable the service and then stop the service also. Both items are on the same tab.
Good luck Mike

BLT,

Your problem lies in your ISP, they are sending you these 'pop-ups' through an administrative feature built into Windows XP Professional, known as the 'messenger' service. A network admin can send messages such as servers gonig offline, or computer labs closing, etc. You can disable your ISP's (Comcast's?) abuse of this service by follwing the steps below:
1. Click Start > Run
2. Type in 'msconfig'
3. Click on the services tab
4. Uncheck the box next to messenger

Its as easy as that. Goodluck. Another good spyware removal tool I use frequently is AdAware, available at download.com. Just be sure to update the software from the opening screen so you catch the latest spyware.
