Port Scans

By d.jones092 ·
Hello.

For the past several weeks, I've been getting hit with port scans quite frequently against pcs on my network. On doing traces, it appears they are from places that would not ordinarily care about doing such things (ISPs, retail stores, etc. The frequency is becoming quite alarming, and to throw another hitch at me, the same is happening on my home pc. The only commonality (besides myself) is that I'm using the same ISP in both places.

Has anyone noticed a lot of port scan activity lately?

It started getting hot and heavy 4 years ago and that's when I stopped reporting them. With all the worms spreading out there it's basically a fact of network life. Last August Microsoft put out a patch for an RPC-DCOM vulnerability. Three weeks later the Blaster worm was released. Networks were saturated by infected boxes scanning for more victims.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft put out a patch for another RPC-DCOM vulnerability. I don't see scanning easing up any time soon.
