Power OFF vs. Restart

By niyaz baluch ·
Is switching off (Shutdown + Switch off from Power soucre, wait for 5 minutes and than restart) the server has the same effect as shutting down (Shutdown and Restart) as far as releasing resources and empating the pagefile on the server?

Thanks

Power OFF vs. Restart

In essence, yes. It will ensure that there is no residual current in the system, retaining the files. Pagefiles are only purged if you shutdown...

So, in a quick and easy manner, yes

Power OFF vs. Restart

Any processes running in the background, as well as foreground applications, are terminated when either a restart, or a shutdown are executed.

The primary difference between the two is powered state of your hardware.

During a restart, power to your system is not completely cut off. The Operating System handles the restart procedure by closing itself down, and then restarting itself. This is also referred to as a "softboot" or a "warmboot."

During a shutdown, power to your computerIS completely cut fof. The Operating System closes itself down, and cuts all power to the hardware in your system. The power button must be pressed in order to startup the system after this has taken place. This ia also referred tp as a "hardboot" or a "coldboot".

Advantages versus disadvantages? Okay:

Advantage of coldboot: All memory is cleared -- hardware and software.

Disadvantage of coldboot: System takes longer to start up.

Advantage of warmboot: Computer memory is cleared and startup is faster than from a coldboot.

Disadvantage of a warmboot: If you are having hardware problems (ie a job stuck in the local printer), then a warmboot may not resolve the issue.
