Prevent installation of Programs

Who can I stop students from installing programs (mostly games) on our lab computers. We use Netware 5.1 on our servers and Win98 2 edition on all the labs.

Prevent installation of Programs

Hi. I am technology coordinator for a school district in Western Pennsylvania. I got the district to by software called Fortres. The company is Fortres Grand Corporation based in Plymouth, IN. 46563. Their phone number is 1-800-882-4381. There website is www.fortres.com. The software intercepts all input commands (mouse, keyboard, anything) and determines if that action is allowed. You configure the machine for allowable access. It is extremely easy to use and will block all unwanted access. I have not had to rebuild any lab computers since the beginning of the school year. Fortres has done it's job. It was $600 for a site license, but you can buy the product in single or bundle licenses as well. It is extremely worth the money.

My fault I should have added without buying another program.

It's late and I am really tired, so if this is a little disjointed, please forgive me.
You can run poledit.exe
(Policy Editor)
It has an interface from which you can turn OFF certain Windows behaviors and restrict some of the usages you were talking about.

To get to poledit.exe go to:

Add/Remove Programs
Windows Setup Tab
Have Disk - Point to CD ROM in one of the subdirectories
Windows 98 CD ROM

It's in a subdirectory called something like,
Admin tools or Nettools (?)

After you install it you will be able to restrict access somewhat in Windows 98.

I can't help you with NetWare, but hopefully only your net administrator will have access to IT.

Take care,
~Felina

I am very aware of using profiles and poledit. But have not found a way to stop students from downloading and installing games.

Thanks but I need more!

I'm head network tech for a large school District in South Mississippi, and encounter the same problem you have on a daily basis.

My answer is a combination of both 1 and 2 above. You don't need to buy an extra program, simply download the Zenworks starter pack from Novell, and install to the server that services the Lab. Zenworks is basically a "super" policy editor that does the job
via NDS.

Because of space, I'm limited to how detailed this answer can be, but feel free to email me if you need some advice.

What you will do essentially, is build two
profiles, an admin user and a student user.
In the student user profile, you can remove
all "run", "browse", "my computer" etc.

I've got most of my labs locked down now so
the students only see their specific application Icons, and nothing else. They can only see one directory ( temp ) on their C:drive ( for saving their work ), and a shared folder on the server. Works like a charm !!

P.S., the file name for the starter pack is
ZSPenu.exe

NO THANKS, We have too much invested in Novell to change.
