Prevention of Instant messengers

By jf555 ·
Hello, I am looking for a product which either specifically disables or prevents the running of the various Instant Messenger programs ( AIM, Yahho, MSN, etc) and/or their installation. I have many clients with hardware based Firewalls (SonicWall) but it is not able to prevent these pests because they will morph into using port 80, the email port which I don't want to disable. Any suggestions? Thanks,

Joe

Hello Joe,

Palidade Systems makes several good products that might help you out.

PacketHound protects your organization by managing your network traffic using a flexible rule set. You can, for example, block an entire network from accessing certain protocols or applications, block all access except in one computer lab, or block on a machine-by-machine basis. You can also use time-based rules to block access during critical hours but allow it at other times, and block based on network load or the load of specific applications.

I talked with Nkosi Shanga (Senior Application Engineer) during HIPAA Sercurity Training and it looks like the product you are looking for.

Hello James,

Thanks again for your answer, however, the cost of the appliances from Palisadesys are just too prohibitice, we are looking to find the $50-100 utility type software to do the job.

If your using Win2K, You could always be real nasty and setup a group policy with allowed programs listed. Any other program would not be allowed to run, thus making your job easier than trying to packet snif.

Thanks to everybody for all their suggestions, however, only the current firewalls which specifically prohibit those processes work as required.
