Print jobs stopping

By jenee.molyneux ·
Win2000 with Canon IP5000 USB printer. Since installation, 70% of first print pages stop partway thru and 95% of second page stops partway thru. Printer has been tested on other PCs and works fine. Printers attached via parallel cable work fine. (IP5000 is only USB). No error messages in event log.Have tried other USB printers with same problem. Put a new hard disk in the PC, installed Win2000 & Office and printed with no problem. Installed original hard disk and printing problem started again. Problem same whether spooled or printed directly to printer.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the printer driver? how about going into device manager and removing the usb and allowing it to reinstall.

I had already totally removed all printer drivers and reinstalled with no change in the problem. I also deleted all usb devices including root hub etc from device manager and let windows reinstall but did not fix the problem.

Since you have no problems with the new hard drive installed, I suggest you remove the USB printing support and possibly USB root hubs also in device manager and let them reinstall themselves.
Descriptions would be for XP, don't have access to W2K right now.

Dryflies, as with P.J. on another question, I didn't intend to echo your answer. I could swear this one also had no answers when I began.

I would uninstall and update the USB and printer drivers on the first hard drive.

The only thing I can think of then is that one or more of the driver files on that HD is corrupted. since you have eliminated the HW by installing windows on a new disk, and reinstalling the printer driver is not effective, I would say that the corrupted file is in the USB driver. From an installation of windows that does work, copy the USB driver files and the plug and play CABS. remove the USB in device manager and then put the new files in place. Make sure the two installations are the same build since we don't want windows versions to be out of synch. then try installing the USB again followed by the printer. Don't ask me the particular names of the files you need to copy, that will take some investigation.

I had already tried this and it made no difference.

Hi

Have you also checked that your printer is designed to work with the USB sockets you have? Your printer may require USB2. Are there USB2 sockets on your machine?

Good luck
