Printer driver not installing

By shanna ·
I'm attempting to get the XP drivers for the HP LaserJet 4100 printer installed and operational on our Windows NT 4.0 (sp 6a) server so our XP client workstations can print to that unit. For some reason, the drivers that I've download from HP and also DriverGuide.com won't install properly. They keep prompting me for Disk 2 od the installation set, and all I was able to download was a single .EXE file that unzips into a single directory. When I then try to install the printer, or add the new drivers to the existing printer, the install fails.

Has anyone herer run into a similiar situation with a networked HP printer, or am i missing something here?

Any help would be appreciated.

a trick i used to do on some HP printers is give it somthing generic that it already has. HP printers can print with other HP drivers. Try the setup process again and choose not from disk but specify one from the list. Choose a laserjet 4000 or anything close to that and i bet u it will print correctly...U can then update the driver later. Another question is this Printer being shared with a Q created on a print server or just through a jet direct card ?

Set it up as an HP LaserJet 5. You will not have any formatting issues if you use the 5.

The problem is that 2000 & XP printer drivers are not compastible with NT4. They just won't install right. I highly recommend you upgrade the server to 2000 or 2003 to avoid issues all together.

The only other option is to map lpt1: or lpt2: to the IP address of this printer and then set the printer up as though it were locally connected to the Windows 2000 or XP workstations.
