Printer moves

By flyfshmn ·
We are getting ready to remove a NT 4.0 server from the domain. It contains numerous mappings to printers.

How do I move the printers to a new server (WIN2000)? Do I create the printers on the new server with same/same (name/IP) or???

Thanks all

You should be able to create the printers on the new server with the same names....BUT the server name will be different so you will have to reinstall the printers on all the client computers.(assuming you are using the server as a print server too)

eg printer \\OLDNT4\PRINTER1 becomes
\\NEWW2K\PRINTER1

The other alternative (and NOT a good one...) is to give your new W2K server the same name as your old server - but then you cannot connect it to the network until the old server is disconnected. If the changeover fails, you have no easy fall back. If you go with a new name, you can run both servers at once to ease the transition.
