Printer sharing

By shahm ·
I am running Windows XP Professional on my computer at home and My printer is connected to it. HOw in the world do I share my printer with other computers running windows 98 and NT 4.0.
I have turned off simple file sharing, I have added the user to the XP system as an administrator. The printer is shared with full permisions to everyone that uses it, all workgroups are the same, I can see each user in the network neighborhood, When I try to add the printer from another workstaion it ask for apassword. I have no passwords on anything. I am not the only one I know having this problem. there are others that are having this problem too and they all work with and around computers and networks all day like me. We are all baffled? Help.

Add the w98 machine as a user to the XP pro machine. Use the W98 machine name and signon.

Well you need to give the administrator pw or the main user pw to which the printer is installed. Then add the print and also enable file and print sharing.

Have you tried the Group Policy Editor? You may want to take a quick look at the effective policies that you have in place for "networked users" - most notably, the options whether to enable network printer driver install and whether blank passwords are allowed for users other than the logged on local administrator.

If that was too vague, check this link for a quick overview...

Turn simple file sharing back on. It will work then. If simple file sharing needs to be turned off for some other reason, I worked around those problems to keep my printer working.

Good luck.
