Printing and SPOOLSS.EXE

By rsears ·
When I have a number of large print jobs in a print queue my NT server, the disk space on my system partition drops very low. My first question; where (what physical file) do spooled print jobs go? Second, is it possible to move the file/files to a different location (one with more free space) on the same drive (different partition) or to a different drive? My third question what exactly does SPOOLSS.EXE do? When jobs are printing, this process uses a lot of CPU time and I would like it to use less, can I force SPOOLSS to use less CPU time without adding more hardware?

Hi,

Location : by default, winnt\system32\spool\printers
Modify :
1 - registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
2 - Start, Settings, Printers , File Menu, click on Server properties and advanced folder : You see the location and can modify.
Restart spool service after modify (users must have Change permission on new directory !).

I don't now how reduce CPU, printing server is a hard job ;-)

1. the spooled print job go to there
%SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Printers

2.You can change the default printer spool directory for all printers or the printer spool directory for specific printers.
To change the default printer spool directoryfor all printers add the following value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
Value Name: DefaultSpoolDirectory
Data Type: REG_SZ
String: full path to printer spool directory

To change the default printerspool directory for specific printers add the following value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\<specific printer>
Value Name: SpoolDirectory
Data Type: REG_SZ
String: full path to printer spool directory
