Problem in the middle of reinstalling xp

    Locked

    by dredrhino ·

I am re installing xp on a new hard drive because I could not get my old to stop going to blue screen and dumping physical memory. I bought a hard drive utility but although the drive could boot up in xp it would not stay on long enough to install the utillity software. So I bought a new hard drive and set it up using the six floppy disc method for xp at the end of this process it is asking me to put in a window 98 or me nt disc beacause there is no other os on the drive that’s when I remebered i only had an xp home edition upgrade. I don’t have any clue where to find my windows 98 what can I do or do I have to buy an old os to finish my xp install

      Two options here:

      1. Borrow one from a friend, your XP will not know the difference.

      Or:

      2. Yes, you will have to go and buy a Full version of an OS prior to XP to complete the installation.

Your xp upgrade will only install over an existing windows operating system. You cannot use it to install to a new disk. If you borrow a full version from someone you will need to call microsoft to get an activation key (or it will only work for 30 days) and charge you for a full version anyway. You would be better off buying a new full version for yourself.

My apologies if I was not concise on which full version to borrow, let me rephrase:

You could borrow a full version of a “prior OS” to install your upgrade version of XP. Giving it back after the install would certainly be the prudent thing to do.

As an admin for my small orginization I in NO WAY, nor will I ever, advocate software piracy.
