    Problem joining Win2k domain

    Locked

    by rmccabe ·

I run a small QA lab, Win2k with AD. We decided to add a subnet to simulate a slow WAN link. I put three workstations in the subnet. The NT4 and Win98 workstations had no problem joining the domain. I get the following message when I try to add the Win2k Pro workstation:

Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

I can ping anything in both subnets. I removed and readded tcp/ip. If I add the computer in AD, the network wizard tells me that it exists.

    What am I missing?

Try adding your domain controller’s IP address to the WIN2KPRO workstation’s DNS settings. Then try to join the domain. Make sure it is the primary DNS address. HTH

This workstation has been set up as static addressed and DHCP. There’s got to be something different about the Win2k OS in this process.

Try an update for the NIC drivers. Had a similar problem and new drivers did the trick. Good luck.

Check to see if the computername exists in the domain… if it does delete it and try to rejoin the domain In NT this was a problem but I am not sure with 2000 AD. Either way its worth a shot.

Thanks, but I tried that. The strange thing is that the Network ID wizard tells me that the computername exists in the domain, so it’s “finding” it. I’m thinking there’s a bad file or .dll somewhere. I’m going to reinstall Win2kPro.

If your rebuild doesn’t work? Could it be since this machine is on the other side of a router that you are blocking some some ports particularly Kerberos Authentication at the router? Just a thought try moving the Win2K Pro workstation to the same side of the router as the DC.
