    Problems playing mp3 and wave files

    I cannot play mp3 files or wave files (midi’s ok).
    When I open media player I get the message: Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding.
    When I try with Winamp I get the message: Could not create DirectSound object.
    When I click on a wav file sound recorder opens with the message: Another application is playing audio, You can either interrupt the audio or wait until it is done. Then try using Sound Recorder again.
    When I try and play a sound from Control Panel – Sounds, I get the message: cannot play ………………wav. Sound Card may be in use.
    When using DirectX diagnostics I get error an message testing the sound. I have tried all manner of things to no avail and admitI’m lost in all this. What can I do?
    I am running Windows 98SE on a Pentium 350 with a Creative Sound Blaster soundcard

      Go to Control Panel/Device Manager and see if there are any conflicts in the Multimedia. If not, remove everything in the Multimedia section, reboot and let Win98 redetect and reinstall the sound card from scratch. When reinstalled, make sure there are no IRQ conflicts.

      I had the same thing happen with an AMD K6-2 350 and Win98se with a SoundBlaster 16. Uninstall (remove) the card in Device manager, than remove any registry entries to it or to Multimedia. Remove any references to teh sound card in Autoexec.bat, config.sys, Win.ini, and System.ini. Reinstall the Sound Card, making sure you have the latest drivers. Sometimes it can take several tries.

      If uninstalling all traces of the sound drivers from your computer, then reinstalling and updating the drivers for your sound card fails, I suggest thinking about upgrading your sound card. Also another tip I have is to goto ->start ->settings ->control panel -> add/remove programs then click on the windows setup tab and remove multimedia (make sureyou have your win 98 cd to reinstall it) to remove multimedia just uncheck it and then press ok. Then re-enter the add/remove programs and goto the windows setup tab and re-check multimedia (your win98 cd should be in the cd-rom to reinstall) then restart your computer and hopefully this will fix it.

      Yes, you could try reinstalling and/or updating the drivers, but I don’t think it will work. The best thing is to replace the sound card, this is what I did with all the systems having this problem. It turned out to be the only valid solution.

        I may end up doing this if I have no joy, but I have been told that my 16 bit SoundBlaster should work.

      hi well there could be three problems and three answers
      1 there maybe an irq conflict
      2 the sound card may be not installed properly
      3 there maybe a conflict of Dlls between all the sound software you have

      well you must be wondering how will i know its i rq right well goto control panel open multimedia and sound video and game contollers then click on it and see properties if its working properly then no conflict but even then if you are unsure just delete the stuff and reload
      2 ask your vendor to do a check on your system if you have cinfigured it yourself take the sound card to a shop and finetune and then put it again . if the problem persists change the card
      3 dont have so many music players windows has a tendsency to make a newly installed music player as default but sometimes the files are associated with another program making conflicts in the registry. try that too k

      I had the same problem a couple of months ago on my girlfriends pc. It was driving me up the wall. I installed different soundcards in the machine. They would work at first but then all of a sudden I would start getting these error messages. I triedeverything. What ended up fixing it was the screw that was holding the card in the pc. I replaced that and have never had a problem since.
