Problems shutting down Windows 98

By mctazman2 ·
I have a Hewlett PAckard Pentium II 533 Mhz machine that just recently has begun to exhibit strange behaviors. WHen I go to shut it down from the menu, it doesn't freeze but rather reboots itself. I have tried uninstalling every possible applicationthat has recently been installed even updating video and sound drivers. Does anyone have any idea what I should be looking at?

Have you tried to boot in safe mode and does the same thing happen ? If it shuts down normal then I would guess a driver problem.

I have already tried the drivers because it does start fine in safe mode and I have even disabled all programs in startup (together and one at a time). WHen disabled startup, shut down is fine but when I just disable randomly, it does not.

Had the same problem, go to RUN type in msconfigclick ok, in the general of system config. screen click ADVANCED make sure there's a check next to:DISABLE FAST SHUTDOWN That cured mine and if that doesn't work there a microsoft site that adresses the problem and can be due to a corrupt sound driver among others http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q202/6/33.ASP

Goodluck!!

there are know issues with win98 shutting down or lack tghere of, and what you described. it is due to an incompatablitly with some mother boards. you can go to mircosoft downloads and get a patch for this problem but before you do that, go to start,, run,,, and type msconfig. then go to start up tab. go down the list ahd every where you see "power profile" un check it. when your done hit ok and it will reboot. after this reboot try shutting down. se if i works. i have had mixed results. i havedone bothe solutions i gave you on alot of pcs but somtimes the work for a while and the problem coms back while other s there fine,
hope this helpd
