    Problems with converted merge documents

When a merge document has been converted from Wordperfect to Word 97 or 2000, or even using cut, copy, paste. Old merge information is still retained in the old document,Word does not display the merge fields and formatting characteristics are often distorted.

Also when merge documents have been created in Word 97 then produced on a PC running Word 2000 we also get formatting problems.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a solution out there?

We manage literally 1000’s of forms with Word. When we upgrade to a new Word version, the 1st thing we do is open the forms in the new version, look for formatting issues and then save the document in the new version.

Even doing this, we often have to go back and ‘tweak’ the documents to get them to reproduce correctly.

Despite a ton of research, and calls to MS.. this is the only solution we’ve found to work reliably.

As for the older WordPerfect Documents… We made our conversion from WP into Word 6.0, as I recall that transition was fairly painless, most of the bookmarks and links however, had to be re-established, before things actually worked properly.

If you have a version of Word 6.0 available, I’d suggest moving to it1st, then to 2000 or whatever your current platform is.

After more searching, when in edit mode in Word 97, put your codes on you view codes and representations.

When in merge mode, put your codes on again, you will view less representations.

I have found that the only way to be sure is to carefully cut/copy/paste text taking care not to take any start and end stops. Often what we believe to be a full stop could be code from a previous version represented as a full stop.
