Problems with Exch5.5 srv account change

I changed the service account as per the white paper
published by Microsoft Product Support on 'How to Change
Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Service Account' published May 22,
2000.

I did manage to successfully change and start the server
with all the services restarting properly. But, the POP3
clients are not able to authenticate. The following error
message is found in the Application Event Log.

EventID: 13003
Source: MSExchange Pop3
Type: Error
Category: Authentication

Logon attempt from <ip address> to <username> has failed:
HrLookupCredentials() call failed with error A required
privilege is not held by the client..

I reverted back to the earlier service account and
everything works fine. My environment is: NT 4.0 SP6 & MS
Exch 5.5 SP3.

I did go through the documentation once again and checked
all the settings with the new service account, everything
is fine.

Any ideas why this is happening? Help highly appreciated.

try removing the internet mail connector and then re-installing it. I
had a similar problem where users were not able to pop their mail. If you have
any problems re-installing IMS, just copy the missing dll file the the Exchange
CD and place itin the appropriate place.

The symptoms show something is missing from your service account settings. Take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q247764 (KB article Q247764). Once you correct the problem, services need to be stopped and restarted.

Thanks for the answer from brasslet@aavid.com.

I guess, probably the KB article Q247764 is correct in a way basically it mentions an additional Windows NT right 'Log on locally', which is not mentioned in the 'MS Product Support Services White Paper' on 'Hot to Change the MS Exch Svr 5.5 Service Account'.

But, before I could verify the above, I'd corrected the problem referring to Article: XADM: POP3 and IMAP Clients Cannot Authenticate After the Dcpromo Process Is Run on Windows 2000 Server (Q255269), which says to reapply SP3, which I did and POP3 works now.
