Programmatic Password entry for RUNAS WI

By andrewcw ·
Under WIN NT I used a MS ultility called SU which allowed me to drive a program as another user. This had the advantage of allowing ACCESS databases on restricted shares to be opened (lock file) as well as ship files to the share, or have a program place files to a locally restricted site. SU does not work on WIN 2000. So how can I get VB to drive it & supply the coded password??

You are using su.exe from Resource Kit for NT4. Authentification has been changed in W2K, and old method doesn't work anymore. Check M$ site for ResKit for W2K.

I did find that SU was in the WIN 2K Resource Kit ( after checking MSDN ). However I have been unable to verify if the new SU works since I dont have the new SU.

Run AS in Win2K.

Hold down shift-key. Right-click program, select "Run As" from menu.

Shortcuts.
Properties, run as different user.

This answer does not address the requirement of programmatic use. When WIN 2K was in beta I hoped that RUNAS would serve my needs, but it seems to be only useful to an administrator who just happens to be overlooking someone's shoulder and can provide the password. In short not very useful or secure if the password is made available
