Proper network configuration.

By Summit ·
I inherited my network.
I want to redesign it, properly.
I have 25 users on the network.
I have an Internet connection and Firewall.
I am using exchange 5.0 right now.
I have a web site using IIs 3.0 right now.
I have files and printers to share.
I want users to be able to remotely access
email, files and printers when out of the office, through RAS and the Internet.
I am looking for a simple diagram on how
this network should look.
Does anybody know where I might be able
to find network diagrams?
Or could anybody draw up a quick diagram
of how my network should properly look?

You will need to setup RAS on a server for users to dial into. Accessing via the Internet will require you to open a secure port through your firewall using PPTP. Make sure that you set the users permissions so they can access the shares through RAS. Accessing the e-mail via Internet will require you to have your SMTP and POP settings configured correctly. If you are using your IIS server for an Intranet site, make sure you have real IP address's for your network. You did not mention anything about your internet connection (T1, OC3, ISDN or Dialup).

In order to draw up a good diagram of what your network should look like you would need to include resourse's and what your plan for the future would be.

First thing to do would be to PLAN PLAN PLAN:

With what you described here goes:
PDC ~ with users home directories
BDC/WINS (WINS is not essential but if your company plans to grow in the future it will become an issue)
DHCP ~ (for anticipated company growth)
file/print server ~ (use logon scripts to map users shared folders. set permissions according to your needs)
If your users use Outlook to access there email. You can setup Outlook web access on your Exchange server for users to connect to.
When you setup the RAS server consider your options... If you want your users to flip the bill with an ISP or have x.25 cards, multiple modems, isdn... etc...

Visio with the Network add on package is a great piece of software for creating Network diagrams. I have used it to do hundreds of professional looking diagrams. If you would like me to make a diagram of your specs and post it online let me know.
