protocol not supported

By chandras ·
Hi
I am in the final stages of getting amanda backup - client version working on my Sun box running Solaris 2.5. Have done the installation and am configuring the /etc/services & /etc/inetd.conf file to get the port working so that the backup server can sniff the client. I have (double)checked the entries but looking up the syslog I get this error "Aug 30 14:16:14 purlin inetd[120]: amanda/udp: socket:
Protocol not supported"

I have posed this question to the amanda user group but didn't get much help. I am hoping the unix people will have a better clue to the error as it may have to do with the O/S.

Thanks

Chandra

I'm not familiar with amanda, but here's a stab from a Unix OS standpoint.

Have you identified a line in /etc/services that reads:
### amanda/udp
where ### is the port number you wish amanda to run on.

If so, did you get this number from the amanda installation instructions for Solaris?

It is very important that the port used is one that has been configured in the Solaris OS. This port must also be the one amanda is attempting to communicate over. If you have the option/ability to assign a specific port for amanda to communicate on then you may want to just assign a default udp port within amanda's configuration. There are some default ports available and some that are pre-assigned as you can see by viewing /etc/services. If amanda uses its own port, the software installation should configure the port and add the lines to /etc/services automatically. If the software installation instructions direct you to manually add a line to /etc/services that is also fine, however the amanda installation should configure the port socket at installation. If you have identified the port properly in /etc/services you may want to look at any installation logs from the amanda install to determine if there were any errors. Also,if it isn't hard to re-install you may want to do that with debugging turned on or by scripting output somehow to catch more logging information.

Here's another hint - your /etc/services file should have the same amanda entries on the client as it does on the server.

I hope this will help.
