qbasic won't print for me

By rbwillba ·
I am running qbasic as a part of a programming class I am taking. I have a Canon BJC-6000 printer on LPT1, which is my default printer, and is configured to spool input from DOS based programs. Every time I run a script containing an LPRINT command, though, I get a warning that the program has performed an illegal operation and it shuts down. I tried re-installing my printer, but nothing changed. What's going on?

I have seen problems like this before. Can you print to the printer from the DOS prompt or from any other DOS program?

Most of the Inkjet printers that I see either do not support printing from DOS programs or a memory resident program must be loaded to send to the printer the proper setup commands in order to print from DOS programs.

I checked at http://www.ccsi.canon.com/goto.shtml?/bjc/index.html and there is not compatibility listed for the MS-DOS operating system.

So I think that your printer can not print a DOS program.

To test boot your computer to the Command Prompt only (or shutdown to command prompt).

Type at the c: prompt

copy autoexec.bat lpt1:

This will copy the autoexec.bat file to the printer. If it still does not print, it does mean that your printer can not print from a DOS program.

If you do not have an autoexec.bat file put config.sys in place of autoexec.bat on the copy command line.
