Question regarding printing

By singhjunk ·
I have a NT workstation on the network. It has an Dot- Matrix printer attached to LPT1.
Whenever I try to print anything from DOS window using either PrintScrn or Alt Print Screen it won't print anything to the printer.

Secondly if I try to openthe printer ( By double clicking the printer icon) I see that it will show that :

the document name, status would be deleting -owner and owner would be anonymus. It keeps fickring going away and coming back. Don't know whats wrong.

1: How can I make it print from a dos- window.
2: all your suggestions and questions if any are most welcome.

Thanks,
Singh

I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer, making sure to check Yes for Printing from DOS.

Secondly, printing from DOS used to be problematic (maybe still is) in that until an application, and sometimes the entire DOS window, was closed, the spooler didn't get an end-of-file. Print jobs would queue fine, but sit there waiting for the EOF that didn't come when you'd think it would.

To print to a dos based printer you need to assign a physical LPT port to the printer. Have you tried redirection? example: DIR > LPT1 this command would print the current directory to the device on LPT1. IF you are attempting to print a screen out of a DOS program that has graphics then it would difficult if not impossible to configure to print to a Dot Matrix printer by using print screen.

The key combinations Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen don't work for a DOS window under WinNT. You can do one of several things: Print Screen prints the screen to the Clipboard as a graphic; you can then paste the screen copy into a WinNT application like Word or WordPad and print it from there. If you just need to do something like print a directory list or the contents of a file, you can use redirection, i.e., dir > lpt1 or type [filename] > lpt1. When you do this, you usually have to close the DOS window and/or press the form feed button on the printer to get the printout to complete. If you are printing from an application, usually the application will allow you to select an LPT port to print to and that should work fine. Hope this helps!
