Is there a limit to the number of hard drives that can belong to an array, or is this a limitation of the controller?

I think the physical limit is like 32 drives (not sure though)... but you also need to realize that the greater qty of drives, the greater the chance of one or more drive failures (hopefully not simultaneously -- because then you cannot recover from the other drives anyway) will occur and rebuilding the array will become a common occurance.
