RAM Upgrade

Hi,

i have p3 1 Gb processor,256 Mb ram.
And i would like to have more ram.
My specialist told me my pc can have additional 500 Mb ram.So it could be totaly 756 Mb with mine.

But one man here,told me,that is not enough to for pc to hold that amount (of ram),but also pc must "see that amount".

I dont understand,what he mean by that.
Can u help me?

What it means is that the Computer or M'Board in this case

Must support the Size of the RAM Sticks that you fit to it as well as the Density.

If you have a Low Density Memory Module in SD RAM it has RAM Chips on Both sides of the Printed Circuit Board that the RAM is part of. The same stick of High Density only has Ram Chips on one side so some M'Boards can see the Low Density but not the High Density. So you need to look at the biggest RAM Stick that your M'Board can support and the type. If you fit something bigger not only will you be wasting your money but the system will be unreliable.

Not only do you need to look at the Maximum Size RAM Stick you can use with your M'Board you also need to see how much it can have loaded. For instance some Dell M'Boards will accept 512 MEG Per Stick and have 3 RAM Slots but will only address the first 512 MEG of RAM so the remaining 2 Slots while populated are not used.

Post back with your M'Board make & Model or the Make & Model of your computer and we will be able to tell you what RAM it uses and how much you can put into it.

Well just the Name in this case Compaq and the Model Number

Would be sufficient here.

You have a HP Custom BIOS of some description with 2 RAM Slots that take SD RAM at 133 MHZ Speed with a Pentium 3 Socket 370 CPU of 1,000 MHZ with a FSB of 133 MHZ.

The Chip Set type is a Intel 815E and there where a lot of different M'Boards made with this Chip Set.

However this should accept High Density SD RAM with a Speed of 133 MHZ and it should be safe to use 2 X 512 MEG Sticks of RAM but if you wish you can mix a 256 and 512 MEG Stick.

You can find the Compaq Service Manuals here on HP's Web Site but you will have to enter the Model Number

Only possible problem is the OS in use here if it is 98 or 98 SE it supports 712 MEG of RAM and if you add more there is a Hack that you need to apply to get the OS to make use of the extra RAM. If it is XP 32 Bit you can use 3 GIG of RAM which this M'Board will not support so you can Max out the M'Board with RAM and not even be close to exceeding them OS's capability to use the RAM.

Well as NT or W2k is essentially XP with a few less tweaks

You don't have a Issue with excess RAM you can fit as much as the M'Board can carry and the OS will use it all.

As for how much you can fit this still depends on the actual M'Board so I need the Model Number of the Compaq Computer. Something like Pavilion and a series of numbers.

If you don't know the Compaq Model Number post the BIOS String that appears on the POST Screen this is a series of Numbers and Letters that Identify the M'Board and BIOS Version. You may need to turn off the Compaq Splash Screen to see this though. The sticker on the case if it is in the original Case is by far the easiest way to proceed from here.

As HP now own Compaq you need to look to HP for answers here so you need to look at the Model of the Computer something like Evo something, Proliant something, Pavillion something, Pesario something.

That is the Model Name & Number.

Click the check your system button and follow the prompts. The software does check your motherboard so the kind of memory and how much you can use is guaranteed to work if you use their tool.

OK working on the assumption that the M'Board isn't original

Or the case has been changed and you do not have a Model Number about the only alternative left is to try something like CTBIOS available here

Both of these can be used to identify the M'Board or the Model of the computer.
