RAS clients can't see internet through P

By mjenko ·
We have one NT4 SP5 server. It uses DHCP to assign IP addresses to LAN computers, but is of course not a DHCP client itself. We also use Proxy Server 2.0 to give clients internet access through an analog modem.

When a RAS client logs in, the client can see all of the LAN, but cannot access the internet through Proxy Server. All LAN addresses are in the 192.100.100.xxx range.
IP forwarding is enabled by the way (it should really be turned off, I know).

Will RRAS instead of RAS do the trick? Is it a WINS issue? What are we missing? The bottom line is that we need to find a way to give our RAS clients a way to use the internet through Proxy Server.

Regards,
MJ

Try installing the Proxy client on the client computers. Map a drive from the clients to the \mspclnt directory on the proxy server and run setup. This will create a WSP Client icon in the Control Panel. You will need to specify the NetBIOS name of the proxy server in the WSP client setup so that it will be permanately configured. Also, make sure that WINS is properly configured and that the clients have the IP address of the WINS server. Good Luck!

All PS clients including the RAS clients are working properly when they are in the office. When the RAS computers leave the office and dial in, they can't see the internet, where in the office they could.

I've set up WINS on other servers for different reasons, but it is not installed on ours. Do I really need WINS?

First off, I'd check the LAT (local address table) on the proxy. If it doesnt include the IP addresses of the RAS clients, they arent getting through.

Is the proxy set to use NT/Challenge Response? If they setup their machines themselves, they probably dont have a domain set (in win98 or win95).. I'd try to use clear text.. but then it will ask everyone for a username and password (even at the office) to login to the internet.. kinda sticky situation..

Hope this helps.

We are going with clear text for now. The LAT is definitely one to check. Thanks for the reminder. MJ

It sounds basic, but did you setup the Proxy options on the clients computers?
You set it in the browser @ Tools, Internet Options Connections, Lan Settings. Without these settings, they cannot connect.
In regards to RRAS, all it does is to route requests. I've never used it for other than allow subnets to route. You already have Proxy, I don't think you'll need RRAS just to allow your clients to access Internet.

Good luck!

All computers, including the RAS clients have the proxy client just like the office clients. Thanks for the RRAS info. MJ
