Recovery after power failure in home

By WinCan ·
When I was surfing the Net there was a power blackout in the neighborhood that required hydro crews to work for 3 hours.
I immediately disconnected all the cables, although I have surge protection. After power was restored I hooked everything back up, pressed the power button on the front of the case and everything worked fine. Using IE did result in a blue screen soon after and I used the repair attached to it.
After a cold start up a few days later, I needed to press the button a few timesand Windows booted fine. Is this old age or maybe caused by the power outage? No other changes in software or hardware since the outage.
My system is 3 years old (Windows 98SE, Pentium II IE 6).

Recovery after power failure in home

It is possible that either your power supply, or the power control circuitry on the motherboard was stressed when you lost power.

The worst situations are when the power sags, and bounces back up a few times, or when the power cycles on and off rapidly.

I would wait a few more days before panicking.

I do recommend that you shut down all back ground programs. (close all programs in the system tray, and use Alt Ctrl Del to locate and shut down other programs that are running)
Shut off your screen saver.
Run Scandisk in thourough mode to clean up any damaged clusters on your hard drive.

If the power up problem does get worse, start with a new CMOS back up battery. It may have low power after running the clock for 3 hours.
(Youshould reset the CMOS memory, and then setup the BIOS settings after changing the battery.)

Then the power supply.

If the problem persists, the next suspect is the motherboard itself.
