Recovery of data off of a corrupted SYS

By camiller ·
SITUATION

NW 5.0 SERVER, The SYS Vol was orginially duplexed across separate SCSI channels. Then expanded on a single drive.
One of the drives in the mirror went bad. The replacement drive would not sync up, and the server would hang trying torebuild. We broke the software mirror but the server will still not stay running for more than 5 minutes. The basic server platform and SCSI card have proven to be OK by the installation of new drives and OS. Naturally there is critical data on the SYS vol that has to be recovered and the dip wad responsible for backups was, well a dip wad. (Previous adminstration, enough said).

I suspect that some NW files have become corrupt.

We are considering two options:
Option 1:
A copy of SP5a is on the SYS vol. If this is run what are the prospects of recovery?

Option 2:
Can NW 5.0 be reinstalled on to the existing SYS vol with out destroying the data files?

1. Don't just copy a service pack, it needs to be (re)installed. If your server doesn't run for more than a few minutes, it won't install as long either, so I think you'd be in a deeper mess after halfway a service pack than you are now.

2. Better solution. Install as an upgrade, you'll then only overwrite the server files. Replace newer files! The newer ones are from a service pack, and it's better to have a complete and consistent set of old files, than a mix of old and new.

3. Check www.ontrack.com. They are not for free, but they might have a solution. And it shows your management that though backups and the administration coming with it costs money, recovereing from a non-existing backup costs more.

Good luck. And if someone kicks the dip wad's butt, tell him to give one extra from me.

Thanks for the response. I found a alternative solution.

1. Start the server with -ns -ndb loadstage 1 & 2, then the drive drivers. This gets access to the drives, and mirroring modifications can be made.

2. Once the drive mirrors were stable, rename SYS to OLDSYS.

3. Install a new drive and a fresh install of NW. (This can either be done on the existing server or move the whole drive system over to a PC. This also allows you to create the server in a new tree so as to not have to fuss with NDS issues.)

4. Mount OLDSYS.

5. Copy and move data to your hearts content.
