    Redhat for a Firewall?

    Locked

    by xpertdragon ·

Just a quick discussion about something that has been on the brain lately…..Am I crazy to think that Red Hat 6.X and beyond can be used as an affective Firewall/VPN solution?

Am I crazy to be thinking that Red Hat is not secure enough for a business to use it as a Firewall? What about Debian? Is that not a better solution? Or does it have something to do with IPTABLES and network compatibility.

Any comments from any Linux and or Security experts is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Paul M. Chavez

There are several Linux based distro’s designed to be setup as router/firewalls that may have more features that you are looking for and should be easier to configure/maintain.

Look into: clarkconnect and freesco to begin. You can also check linux.org for a list of distrobutions and their desinged role.

Perhaps, I was misunderstood by my first posting…..what I am getting at is, Is there any rationality in having Red Hat as a Firewall? Meaning, I do not think it is a good choice, and there are other, more SECURE alternatives to using Red Hat……any comments on this matter?

Debain is it a firewall for multiple networks??

In reply to Redhat for a Firewall?

I am using a debain server to provide security to my network. The squid3 is configured to use it to act as a firewall. Only computers in my network or with the same ip is given permission to go to internet through squid3.( actually internet usage restriction). But when i tried to configure with three network cards in the same machine. 1. card to network with 10.1.111.0 and the second one connetced to a network 192.168.15.0 and the third card to act as a router in 10.1.111.0 network the firewall solution is not working properly with squid3 configured.
