Back up any data files you wish to save.

Be sure that you have your product Key for Windows, and any network or internet settings written down.

If needed, create a W98 startup disk.

Make sure to have all device drivers downloaded and available.
Use the free Adviser at www.belarc.com if needed to generate a list.

1. Boot from the startup floppy.
2a. Run the command format C: /u/s at the command prompt.
2b. For a more thorough clean out, run fdisk /mbr at the command prompt.
Run fidsk and delete all logical drives and partitions.
Re-boot, and run fdisk
Partition the drive as desired
See www.aumha.org or www.fdisk.com/fdisk for more info on fdisk
Re-boot, and format at least the C: drive

3. After the format is complete, insert the W98 CD and run setup from the DOS prompt.

4. I always choose a custom setup, and install only the Windows components I want.

5. Install device drivers:
Chip-set / motherboard
DirectX (from Microsoft, at least the latest version supported by the video card manufacture)
Video card driver
Modem
Sound Card
Other devices

6. Boot into safe mode.
Run scandisk and defrag

7. Set up your Internet service and install Windows updates.
NOTE: at this time, I recommend NOT installing IE6 on W98 systems.
You can get IE 5.5 SP2 from www.evolt.org

8. Install programs

The chas was pretty thorough up there nice job, About the only thing I'ld add is if you have a lot of additional cards (Network, Modem, Sound,...)I'ld be tempted to remove them and install them 1 at a time after I had the operating syste up and running. Good Luck!

The above info is good but also make sure you have the right CD disk drivers on your start up disk before you format.
