Reformatting DriveSpaced hard drive

By jcurry8444 ·
Have some very old PCs I am cloning for limited use. Some have been compressed with DriveSpace. Can't use Norton Ghost directly, so tried to reformat the drive first and message said it was the wrong version. OS is Win95. I tried Windows 95 and Windows 98 boot disks. DriveSpace was done by my predecessor several years ago. Any ideas?

You need to determine the OS version on the old PC. The best way to do that is imho by starting the can and check system properties.
After that you need a bootdisk of that system.
There is programs that makes bootdisks for the wanted OS version. You dont have to make the disks from the wanted system but the program contains all neccesary files. The bootdisks are available for free at:
http://www.bootdisk.com/original.htm
Hope this helps.

A few steps to help.
1. Go to bootdisk.com and download some bootdisks.
2. If you have a copy of nt 4.0 or w2k there is a boot disk builder utility on each. this will allow you to boot the machine from floppy and then use the partition utility to remove all existing partitions (and compression). Then you can use the same utility to format the drives in either ntfs or fat.
3. are you thinking of clustering old machines? If so you may want to look at using ntfs and w2k.
4. if not the bootdisks from bootdisk.com can be used to invoke fdisk to clean off the partitions.
5. if these are not what you are looking for let us know..........

The key here was that removing the partition would also remove the compression! Thanks!

Today, I have found to have close to the same problem. The PC is older and booted up with Win95 and shuts down with Win98. I went into the setup (F2), when booting up, to see what the settings showed. The PC thought it was running 95 and showed "Yes" for running OS 95. I changed the "Yes" to a "No" because I planned to format and reinstall using a 98 boot disk. My new install was successful. However, I did delete the logical drive and rebuilt before a new installation. Hope this helps.

Again, the "delete the logical drive and rebuilt" were the unknown key that opened the door to my brain!
